VA Starts Mentoring Program for Veteran-Owned Small Businesses

Source: http://www1.va.gov/

Washington – To help small businesses owned by service-disabled Veterans and other Veteran-owned small businesses become more competitive in the marketplace, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has selected 20 mentor-protégé teams to participate in a new program.

"For VA, it’s a natural goal to award government contracts to qualified Veteran-owned small businesses,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “Not only does it benefit the Veteran entrepreneur, but VA gets the contractor support it needs more quickly and with less risk. All Veterans win by getting better services from VA.”

The program commits participating firms to agreements of up to 36 months in which mentoring firms provide business assistance in various skill areas and foster long-term business relationships with their Veteran-owned protégé firms. The mentor and protégé firms will prepare their own agreements.

VA selected the teams based on its assessment of small businesses owned by Veterans and the ability of potential mentoring firms to offer help with development.

Small-business specialists in VA’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization reviewed the agreements formed by the participants. The mentoring firms are not necessarily Veteran-owned. Their mentoring can benefit the protégé firms if VA evaluates them in bidding for future contracts or subcontracts.

VA said it plans to select five more pairs of mentor and protégé firms next month. VA will select additional mentor-protégé teams next August and approximately every six months thereafter.

More information on the new program can be found at http://www.va.gov/osdbu.

MilitaryAvenue Resources for our Partners

Are you using all the available resources of MilitaryAvenue? One of our goals at MilitaryAvenue.com is to connect the military community with your "outside the gates" business. With that in mind we have multiple ways for you to reach the military community and I want to ensure you are using them all!

We have many opportunities for businesses around large military population centers to list ads in multiple locations. We allow three free ads within 100 miles of your office. Are there multiple installations nearby? Have you placed an ad at three of them?

It is a mobile world --- Be a part of the action!

Is your business on Facebook?  If not it should be!  It is a great way to build a fan base and spread the word amongst friends, your future customers.

Click here to get started! and then fill out the right-page, "Official Page".  The next page is some simple instructions to get your page live; you can post a picture, import your contacts and much more.  With just a little work you can be live on Facebook in 5 minutes!

I think this next-step is a very important part of getting your business on the Facebook-map though! 'Claim your place!'

To claim your Place, search for your business name on Facebook via the normal Search bar. If your business’s Place already exists on Facebook, click on it to visit its page. At the bottom left side of your Place there will be a link that says "Is this your business?" Click on the link and you will be directed to a claiming flow.

Facebook will ask you to verify that you are the owner through a phone verification process, or you may be asked for document verification. Once your claim is confirmed, you will own your Place on Facebook. (Source: http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=18365)

If a customer comes into your place of business with their mobile phone they can broadcast to all of their Facebook-Friends that they are there!  Talk about getting the word out for you!

Their status could look like this if they just walked into their favorite Exercise Facility for a class:

Or perhaps if they walked into your restaurant it would say: "Waiting for my favorite Cheddar Soup" - at Hometown Restaurant

Or if they are signing paperwork for the closing of their house: "I'm going to be a homeowner!" - at Cindy Jones of Prudential Real Estate

You get the idea!  The Military-Family is a huge network of family and friends.  As they "check-in" to your business the world will start to spread like wild-fire!

So get out there and get the word out!

post-Veterans Day: A Call to Action

Yesterday morning, to celebrate Veterans Day, we sent out an email to all of our Veteran and Active Duty MilitaryAvenue Users.  The gist of the email is here.  We wanted to be sure that this very important group of people received a "Thank You for serving" in their email box first thing on their day.

Within moments of sending the card I had an email response:
"Thank you for remembering, it is nice to be recognized." - Alfred
and then they kept coming...
"Thank you for your greeting. Although I have been retired for some time now, It would be a distinct pleasure & honor to do it all over again.  I just wish there was some small way I could serve my Country once more." - Richard
"Thanks for your remembering us.  My time in the United Stated Marine Corp. and the United States Army Reserves are a part of me that was a honor.  Once again thank you." - Tom
and are still coming this morning...
"You're welcome. Thank you to you, too!" - Tim
This isn't all of them.  It is just a sample!

What a giving and selfless group of people!  Not only have Veterans given of themselves freely to serve our country but they are thanking ME for my Thank You to them!  Wow.

Did you know there are more than just a hand-full of ways for YOU to thank a veteran?  101 Ways to thank a Veteran  The list was a huge hit on Facebook and Twitter, passed around amongst friends, colleagues, family, groups, companies.  It reached thousands of people and we have the numbers to show it!

So now is the call to action!

Lions and Tigers and ... Military Discounts at the zoo!

Part of a military family's struggle to get acclimated to a new community is to know where to go to get off base or post.  Any PCS (move), reintegration (the time home right after a deployment) or even a trip back to the old stomping-grounds to visit grandparents, aunts, uncles... requires family-time.  What better way to spend time together then visiting a local reputable attraction.

My own family is spread out and we took the time this weekend to meet in a central spot - Toledo, Ohio.  Friday night the cousins (from 2 months old to 8 years old) had a great time together (there were a few pillow fights and some wonderful times in an indoor pool at the hotel).  The adults enjoyed watching the laughs and giggles of the younger generation as well as time sitting around catching up and reminiscing.  But Saturday we got out!  We all visited the local zoo, the Toledo Zoo.

What a wonderful way to spend time as a family!  AND what wonderful support the Toledo Zoo has for our military and families:

Active military personnel and retired veterans show your military ID at the admission gate and receive FREE admission. Immediate family members are eligible for the group rate discount. For family members of military personnel who are currently serving, please show your dependent card at the admission gate to be eligible for the group rate.

What about your local zoo.  Do they offer a military-discount?  Let them know they can advertise for free on MilitaryAvenue.com.  We want to get the word out for them in our Rest & Relaxation category 'Zoos'.  We will give them the publicity they deserve for helping our military families!

- Leanne from MilitaryAvenue.com

PS:  Is it time to update your Military Reward on MilitaryAvenue.com?  Perhaps you can give discount tickets to a local attraction or better yet give a military family season passes to the local zoo, museum or other attraction.  What a wonderful way to say "Thank you!" and help a military family get to know their new community!

Veterans Day 2010 - What are you going to do for our Military-Veterans?

Next month is Veteran's Day and a great chance for you to note their sacrifices and protection of our great country. As a MilitaryAvenue Partner what are you doing to recognize our Military and Families this upcoming Veterans Day? Start preparing now for this day of recognition for those who have frequently given so much for their country.  Many military families are operating with a second or third deployment over the holidays! Can you say "again"? Many Military-Veterans didn't get the recognition they so deserved so many years ago.  All Veterans and families could use a simple "thank you" from all of us.

Welcoming our Military to your place of business

Here are ideas to jump start your recognition of Veteran's Day. Make it something that makes veterans and their families feel appreciated:
  • First of all offer a Veterans Day Special, for our veterans.  Offer something from the heart that you know your military-veteran customers will appreciate. It is only a small token of what they have done for us!
  • Hang a "Veterans, Thank You" sign on your door (Something like: http://militarymarketing.militaryavenue.com/2010/05/what-does-your-storefront-or-website.html)
  • Sponsor or become involved in a Veteran's Day parade and encourage others as well
  • Add a special event to our Event Calendar so the new military families get the word about the local area (How to place an event on MilitaryAvenue)
  • Have your sales staff made aware of military customers and task the staff to thank them for their service
Getting the word out

  • First of all, if you are having a Veterans Day Special, log on to your account and update your reward.  Do this before November 1st so that it will be included in our monthly-Alerts!
  • If you are not a MilitaryAvenue Partner yet NOW is the time!  A Military Discount year round equals free advertising!  (List with us)
  • If you are offering a remarkable military discount or incentive for our Veterans we will add it to our growing list - Veterans Day 2010 - Military Discounts.  Last year's list was circulated by official military-organizations, military-spouse and family groups, and so much more and is STILL looked at every day.
The Reward that you have earned

To show our appreciation for your support to our veterans and their families we are having a "We Thank Veterans Campaign" until November 11th! Make the promise to thank veterans and we will offer you a ten percent (10%) discount on any upgrades with the discount code, "VETERANS". Log in to your account and build your upgrade! During checkout enter the discount code and it will be automatically discounted and your ad year starts again! Thank you!

Supporting the Relocation, Travel and Lifestyle Needs of the American Military Family

Yoga, Our Newest MilitaryAvenue Category

Do you teach yoga or do you know a local business that does? If you have a special affinity for our US Military then you will be happy to know we have recently added 'Yoga' as a new category under Fitness on MilitaryAvenue. What do you have to do to have an ad on MilitaryAvenue.com? Offer a Military Discount! That's pretty simple! Sign-up here!

For all of the Yoga instructors and businesses out there I wanted to share an article from Army.mil that you may enjoy:

A major problem discovered by the task force is an "over-reliance on medications to treat pain" and the "increased prevalence of prescription abuse" among Americans in general.

To tackle these obstacles, the report recommends the use of integrative and alternative therapeutic modalities such as yoga, acupuncture, meditation and biofeedback in a patient-centered plan of care.

As a yoga instructor you can help our wounded warriors, our stressed spouses on the homefront, the military community in general! Get the word out about your services and be sure to thank your new customer for THEIR service to our great country!

By the way, we have quite a few categories in the Fitness category: Exercise & Fitness, Fencing, Fitness Clothing, Gymnastics & Dance, Martial Arts, Recreational Trails and now Yoga. If you know of a business in one of these categories be sure to let them know about MilitaryAvenue.com. Marketing to the Military community has never been easier! (We even have an easy card you can print and hand to your colleagues.)

"Pay, benefits make military towns affluent" - Are you tapping in?

Just in case you wondered about the impact of your local military-installation on your community...

Rapidly rising pay and benefits in the armed forces have lifted many military towns into the ranks of the nation's most affluent communities, a USA Today analysis finds. *

According to the article on MilitaryTimes.com some of this new found affluence is from hazardous-duty incentives and combat pay in war zones.  (I would supect a majority of the pay increase since 2000, actually)  How are you taking care of the spouse and children back home in your town?  How is your business welcoming the troops when they return home?  Don't wait for other businesses to show their appreciation and support!  Be the front-runner!

Be sure to grab the military-families' attention in your community!  Become a MilitaryAvenue Partner today.  Already a MilitaryAvenue Partner?  Be sure your ad is up to date!

"Did You Know?" The impact of online-advertising...

I recently ran across this video and thought our MilitaryAvenue Partners would enjoy it.  Take a moment (or two) to watch it and think about your advertising and the future of your business!

By the way ... the message in the video is not new.  We have been touting the importance of reaching the mobile, fluid, military-community via the internet for quite some time.  But this is a great reminder, full of fun and interesting facts!

We know you that as a MilitaryAvenue Partner you want to be in touch with /this generation/; the mobile, the movers, and the in-touch.  Your business is on the Internet (find your business on MilitaryAvenue.com via our Reward Finder)!  We share ads on Twitter and Facebook.  (Find out more: MilitaryAvenue Partners: Value Added ... We continue to succeeded; yet, we won’t ever take it off our list of goals because we want to reach EVERYONE and continue a relationship with our users in order that our Partners get the business exposure they deserve!

The more families that sign up for Alerts in your area, the more they learn about you and what you have to offer. YET ... what do the military-families want to see more of? Area Military Discounts! “Shoulder to Shoulder” with the Afghan Legal System – DoD Roundtable

Are you ready to give your life for your country? For the privilege of voting? To defend your people from those who intimidate and would establish an autocratic legal system depriving many of basic human rights? When I started the DoD Blogger’s Roundtable this morning it was an add on to a very busy schedule and I was not sure how to talk about the Afghan legal system and its relevance to our readers! Then Colonel Rick Rousseau, with the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate (OSJA), NATO Training Mission Afghanistan & Combined Security Transition Command Afghanistan (NTM-A/CSTC-A) told me about First Lieutenant (1LT) Lutfallah Abrihimi, an Afghan soldier, legal officer and patriot!

Why is the Lieutenant’s story important to us? Because he did all of those things! He is why we are in Afghanistan and an example of a hero that can be used to explain to others exactly why we should oppose autocracy worldwide! But I get ahead of Col Rousseau’s story to the Roundtable!

Think of a country controlled in the past by the Taliban, communists, the Soviets, the tribal leaders and many others! Imagine the legal systems involved! Think of land ownership disputes! Try to get Title Insurance on that house! Or ask the county administrators for a land plat to determine who owns what! Take the next step and put yourself in the Afghan Army! Now you are an American legal officer giving advice to the development of the Rule of Law within the Afghan Army and the National Police! Head spinning a bit? That is Col Rousseau’s job with his staff of JAGs and legal advisors. He has three divisions that deal with specific issues including the legal systems for the National Police and Afghan Army.

They have stood up a national legal school for Army officers and are completing about 300 courts-martial a year! Rousseau said they had a developing system similar to the UCMJ. It has been successful but they were challenged when it came to senior officers (Colonels and above) which take political will to prosecute! They are “building the foundation” and the system is not perfect but developing. They are improving and adding significant numbers of judicial security officers and meeting the challenges of unlawful command influence head on! During one recent legal conference an Afghan general said they just had to do what is right! Getting that mindset to be the standard is the challenge!

They have added women in the legal offices as more women are recruited for the Army and police service as well! The colonel said they deal with family issues and abuse problems. He said they are crawling in this area but going to the walking phase. He has not seen any stigma or delays to continued growth in this area of the rule of law. The State Department is bringing in a special Ambassador this summer to deal with the entire Afghan rule of law issues. He is expecting a joint task force of multiple countries, government agencies, civilian and military, Non Governmental Organizations, etc to participate! Despite the challenges of so many folks being involved the colonel seemed excited to see progress in Afghanistan’s Rule of Law! Why? Let’s go back to the Lieutenant’s story!

Emergency leave requested properly for a family crisis in Kabul the lieutenant could not find air travel on such short notice from Kandahar so he jumped on a bus! It was the day after national elections – Aug 21st, 2009! The Taliban had threatened to cut off the fingers of those who voted since they could see the ink stains required to vote! The bus was stopped/hijacked by a group of Taliban as it moved the passengers to their destinations. The Taliban attempted to impose their form of injustice and Lieutenant Lutfallah Abrihimi said not on this bus and killed three of the Taliban with his service revolver before running out of bullets! Defying the remaining Taliban he died standing up for the rights of its citizens to cast a vote! To read more please go to Afghan Soldier, Lawyer and Hero and thank you Colonel Rousseau for telling us this story!

Do you want to listen to or read a transcript of the Roundtable? Please go to DoDLive! Want more articles from MilitaryAvenue.com on Afghanistan? Please go our Reading Room!

What Does Your Storefront or Website Tell the Military Community? MAPP Tip!

Last week we were traveling to Ft Riley, KS to attend and help support a special military spouse event. As always we featured our partners and what you bring to the military community!

Our first night stop was near St Louis and we had a few minutes to tour Historic St Charles and get dinner after a long day on the road. As we walked the street taking in the shops we jumped when we saw this store window! We had limited time, were tired and had just been window shopping but this sign pulled us to the door! Does your sign or website do that? Does it say "Welcome"? "We Support Our Troops"? How do you reach out? Is your best foot forward to those serving and protecting?

Here is how MilitaryAvenue.com, The Mane Thing Salon and Spa, Headliners Tanning and Spa, USAA, AAFES, DeCA and many others showed their appreciation and support recently by supporting the Army Wife Network's "Priceless Packages" at Ft Riley!

Are you aware of local military events and want to get involved? Talk to the MWR offices or public affairs! If you need help let us know and we can give you some hints! Are you on MilitaryAvenue? Its easy to place an ad at your local installation (free with a Military Reward) and nation wide (248 installations) banners are available! Go here or give us a call at 616 855 4134!!

PS: Thank you Nic-Nac Stop for making us feel appreciated and supporting the USO! We have spent many hours in the St Louis USO!

Air Dropping Your Message! What is New on MilitaryAvenue - The Department of Defense Blogger's Roundtable

What is a DoD Blogger's Roundtable? Why should I care as a business owner, marketing director, etc? First, let me explain what the Roundtable is and then tell you why it is important for your business and marketing strategy.

About six months ago MilitaryAvenue was invited to participate in the Department of Defense Bloggers Roundtable with other media outlets such as the Armed Forces Press Service, CNN, Stars and Stripes, ABC and other national outlets. We had grown in stature to be paired with some very big organizations!

The Roundtables are designed to bring the decision makers to the media such as MilitaryAvenue so we can tell their story to our readers! We have discussed the Haiti military response following their earthquake, medical care for military families, Wounded Warrior programs, the impacts of the Icelandic volcano on air traffic, Iraq and Afghanistan operations, withdrawal from Iraq and many more topics! These discussions have frequently been with 3 and 4 star generals/admirals and civilian leadership at the Pentagon or front line commanders/public affairs specialists on hot button topics. After one Roundtable we were invited to personally interview Lt General Keen, the commander of Joint Task Force Haiti in a one on one interview! General Keen had been in Haiti when the earthquake occurred so it was a very personal story! This program allows us to be an advocate for military families with our questions and written articles and to tell the military community about the whirlwind of activity around them!

After the roundtable discussion (usually no more than four or five writers attend so we get individual questions with the decision makers/commanders) we write a blog/article on the subject and then place it on our Facebook page, place it on twitter for followers to see and send it to the Department of Defense New Media. Usually the Department of Defense New Media, DoDLive then publishes a hot link to MilitaryAvenue! We receive numerous comments, traffic and visibility after the blogs!

Now we are talking about why this is important to you the business owners and marketing directors: Visibility for our efforts to support the military family by connecting them with your business brings more friends, fans and visits to your ads! For example, after one recent Roundtable I received this email comment from a participant:

"Military Avenue is one of the DOD oriented blogs I read, so I was happy to hear someone on the interview from the blog."

We use Facebook and twitter to highlight your ads too! Just like we do the Roundtable articles so our fans at both social media see a great mix of information, interviews and advertisements! It increases our credibility and improves your reach! Have you seen our Facebook page? Did you know that you can introduce yourself on the page and become a fan to keep up on the news and receive new ideas for the military community's interests? Just go to Facebook/MilitaryAvenue and become a fan and while there tell others about yourself and what you offer the military community! (Stop by and introduce yourself!)

If you would like to see some of the Roundtables that we have participated in please go to DoDLive or go to Our Letters to You/DoD Roundtable to read some of the articles we have written! By the way when we were invited to attend we were reluctant at first due to schedules, workloads and other obstacles. It was a hunch that they might be productive from one member of our team that led to our participation. The results have been almost viral for us as we have seen a tremendous success from our participation!

Military Spouse Appreciation Day; May 7, 2010

Military Spouse Appreciation Day is the Friday before Mother's Day; May 7, 2010. "The first Military Spouse Day was first celebrated in 1984 when then-President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the observance to honor the contributions of military spouses. The military now sets aside the Friday before Mother's Day each year to pay tribute to the spouses who play a vital role in the nation's defense." (http://www.army.mil/spouse/)

What are you going to do for our behind the scenes military-spouses; the wives and husbands of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guard?  Get your community involved.  Perhaps a community day down 'central avenue'.  Flowers for military spouses, massages, manicures, free-planners.  Each participating store could have their own 'give-away'.  These ladies (and men!) need the pampering!  Do you need more ideas?  Read '101 Ways to Thank a Military Spouse'.  Quite a few ideas are business oriented, all of them are spouse-centered.

Let us know what you are going to do!  We want to let the military-community know that the businesses outside the gates genuinely care!   Become a military-partner and make this special event a part of your 'Reward', or military-discount.  If you are a partner UPDATE your Reward to include the Military Spouse.  Do this before May 1st and it will be a part of Military-Alerts.  Your Event.  Their email box.  Talk about some great publicity!

I'll leave you with this 'poem' written in honor of Military Spouse Appreciation Day:

We come in all...

Shapes
Sizes
Ages
Backgrounds
Colors
Theologies
Ideologies
Societies

Some of us are Army-strong, others of us are in the Air Force-blue, there are a few proud Marines, a wealth of Navy and the ever-vigilant Coast Guard.

We love our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coasties. Most of us don't wear the uniform but all of us swoon (deeper than a civilian can understand) when we see the uniform.

We keep the home-fire lit and our babies at bay. We manage the home-front with grace and ease mixed with a few fumbles and a bit of heartache. We may not be "issued" but we are chosen!

We depend on friends, mentors, networks and far away family to get us through the tough times.

We use strength to carry us. Distance to mold us. Tears to soften us. Laughter to brighten us. Perseverance to humble us.

Reach out today to your military-spouse community!  Start planning an event they won't forget! You won't regret it.

Farmers Markets, Garage Sales, Crafts Shows... OH MY!

Spring will soon be upon us!  Sometimes that is hard to remember with still a couple of inches of snow on the ground here in northern-Ohio but my mind can QUICKLY take me to warmer weather; time outdoors; getting to know the community after the lazy days of winter!  To many military families Spring can mean getting out and getting to know their community for the FIRST time.

What is big in your community?  Farmers Markets?  Parades? Concerts in the Park? These are great events that military families WANT to know about!

It is really, I mean REALLY, easy to place an event on MilitaryAvenue.com!

1.  Find your installation:   Air Force  Army  Navy  Marines  Coast Guard

2.  Scroll down towards the bottom of the installation's home page and click on "Let us know":

3.  Fill out the fields (they are all required):

HINT: If you are looking for exposure for your own business: Blog about the event or write an article about it and place the information on your web-site.  Then when you are placing the event on MilitaryAvenue use your URL for the 'Informational link'We trust you not to cheat though. We check all of the links, so be sure the link you are pointing to pertains directly to the event, though.  (BTW ... when posting an informational link be sure to include 'http://' at the beginning.)

4.  Hit Submit.  We review all events to make sure they are true-events and not promotional ads.  After we approve - within 24 hours - it will be on that installations page!

5.  If your event is near more than one installation it is easy to replicate the event.  After you have 'submitted' you can change the installation to the next close-base and hit submit again.  All of the other information should still be there, and you can change some of it too if that makes the event more pertinent to that installation.

Wasn't that easy?  Tell your local area-tourism offices or Chamber of Commerce about this handy way to get the word out, too.  (You could even just forward this blog to interested parties!) Your military families will thank you!  And so will the event-planners as they gain a greater turn-out.

The Veterans Airlift Command says, “THEY'VE GOT HEART...THEY NEED WINGS”

I wrote this blog to our military community followers this morning to highlight a special program for wounded warriors. I thought our MilitaryAvenue Partners might want to know about the program as well! If you know of a wounded warrior in need or a pilot willing to help please contact Veterans Airlift Command!

I was hard at work today when I saw a tweet from a friend and decided to find out more! Ever follow your gut and realize that you did the right thing later? Stephanie, a Marine Corps spouse asked if I had ever heard of Veteran Airlift Command and I said no, but let me check this out. A pilot is always curious about aircraft stories ... more.

Military Dates to Remember April - June 2010

We decided to post this blog series a bit early this quarter due to the all the events and to give our Partners a chance to plan your recognition efforts for your military community! This blog is a series of quarterly blogs to keep you aware of military events so we can help our military Partners and community stay connected! Just as you can find the military community working hard anywhere in the world we work hard to find new ways to help you reach out! One of our recommendations has been to stay in tune with the military community events in your local area. This quarter is jam packed with events such as the Month of the Military Child, National Military Appreciation Month, etc.! So stay in tune and recognize the troops and their families!

To help you know when national events are about to occur here is quarterly listing of dates important to the military community so you can use them for marketing your message of involvement in their lives. So here is a list of dates you should know for April, May and June. Many of these have a direct impact on your military community!

If you know of other dates please leave a comment with your date and the reason it is important.

April

Month of the Military Child!
Nothing more important than the children of our serving military personnel! Recognition of their sacrifice is a great way to say thank you!

May

National Military Family Appreciation Month

Military Spouse Appreciation Day
May 7th this year (the Friday before Mother's Day)

Armed Forces Day
May 15th this year (Third Saturday in May)

Memorial Day
May 31st this year (Last Monday in May)

June

Flag Day
June 14th

US Army Birthday
June 14th

Thank you for the great support to your military community! Please pass on these dates to business organizations such as your chamber of commerce to insure that they are appropriately recognized! One other quick recommendation is to not just have a sale on days like Memorial Day but include a special military discount or some recognition such as a small token of appreciation! Recognize those serving or who have served in some manner! Be military friendly and the word will spread rapidly!

Are you aware of a local event that the military community needs to know about? You can place it directly on MilitaryAvenue! Go to the installation home page in your area and go to the Upcoming Local Events at the bottom center of the page and click on the Let Us Know to tell us about it! We will review and quickly post!

Another great military blogger with a great explanation of some of the important military dates focusing on the US Army is Loving A Soldier Living the Life. Thank you Star and Tara!

Homes for Our Heroes & other great organizations looking for your support

There are a lot of great organizations out there that support our military-families in times of need; from deployment-support (Armed Services YMCA), to a new baby for young parents (Operation Homefront); from wounded warrior transitions (Wounded Warrior Project), to dealing with the unexpected loss of a military-member (TAPS). These organizations (and so many more) help families cope with major change: some expected, some very unexpected.

A big Kudos to our MilitaryAvenue Partner, Stephanie McGee, a Realtor with Keller Williams Preferred Realty.  She is going out of her way to raise money for Homes for Our Troops an organization that supports wounded-warriors.

First, she alerted us to this great organization so that we could tell military families about it:
Help Us Build a Home for Your Local Hero

Now Stephanie is taking it upon herself to help the organization herself!

Dear Family and Friends,
I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to support Homes for Our Troops. Please help support me in this important project by contributing generously. For information about this volunteer fundraiser and its programs, you can visit http://www.homesforourtroops.org/.

It is faster and easier than ever to support this great cause by making your tax-deductible donation online using the link below. If you would prefer, you can send your contribution to the address listed below.  Whatever you can give will help - it all adds up! I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress.

Sincerely,
Stephanie Mcgee

What are you doing for our Heroes? Get involved! It not only looks great on the ‘resume’ but it shows TRUE support for the military family! A military family can sniff out a marketing-ploy when they see one. Don’t fall victim to ‘cheap marketing’. Put your heart into it! Think about what these families /need/ and then go about getting it done!

Contribute to Stephanie's cause by click on her personal-fundraising page above, or start your own fundraiser for an accredited military-organization.  THEN let us know about it!  We love to let military-families know about organizations that support them.
