The Veterans Airlift Command says, “THEY'VE GOT HEART...THEY NEED WINGS”

I wrote this blog to our military community followers this morning to highlight a special program for wounded warriors. I thought our MilitaryAvenue Partners might want to know about the program as well! If you know of a wounded warrior in need or a pilot willing to help please contact Veterans Airlift Command!

I was hard at work today when I saw a tweet from a friend and decided to find out more! Ever follow your gut and realize that you did the right thing later? Stephanie, a Marine Corps spouse asked if I had ever heard of Veteran Airlift Command and I said no, but let me check this out. A pilot is always curious about aircraft stories ... more.

Military Dates to Remember April - June 2010

We decided to post this blog series a bit early this quarter due to the all the events and to give our Partners a chance to plan your recognition efforts for your military community! This blog is a series of quarterly blogs to keep you aware of military events so we can help our military Partners and community stay connected! Just as you can find the military community working hard anywhere in the world we work hard to find new ways to help you reach out! One of our recommendations has been to stay in tune with the military community events in your local area. This quarter is jam packed with events such as the Month of the Military Child, National Military Appreciation Month, etc.! So stay in tune and recognize the troops and their families!

To help you know when national events are about to occur here is quarterly listing of dates important to the military community so you can use them for marketing your message of involvement in their lives. So here is a list of dates you should know for April, May and June. Many of these have a direct impact on your military community!

If you know of other dates please leave a comment with your date and the reason it is important.

April

Month of the Military Child!
Nothing more important than the children of our serving military personnel! Recognition of their sacrifice is a great way to say thank you!

May

National Military Family Appreciation Month

Military Spouse Appreciation Day
May 7th this year (the Friday before Mother's Day)

Armed Forces Day
May 15th this year (Third Saturday in May)

Memorial Day
May 31st this year (Last Monday in May)

June

Flag Day
June 14th

US Army Birthday
June 14th

Thank you for the great support to your military community! Please pass on these dates to business organizations such as your chamber of commerce to insure that they are appropriately recognized! One other quick recommendation is to not just have a sale on days like Memorial Day but include a special military discount or some recognition such as a small token of appreciation! Recognize those serving or who have served in some manner! Be military friendly and the word will spread rapidly!

Are you aware of a local event that the military community needs to know about? You can place it directly on MilitaryAvenue! Go to the installation home page in your area and go to the Upcoming Local Events at the bottom center of the page and click on the Let Us Know to tell us about it! We will review and quickly post!

Another great military blogger with a great explanation of some of the important military dates focusing on the US Army is Loving A Soldier Living the Life. Thank you Star and Tara!

Homes for Our Heroes & other great organizations looking for your support

There are a lot of great organizations out there that support our military-families in times of need; from deployment-support (Armed Services YMCA), to a new baby for young parents (Operation Homefront); from wounded warrior transitions (Wounded Warrior Project), to dealing with the unexpected loss of a military-member (TAPS). These organizations (and so many more) help families cope with major change: some expected, some very unexpected.

A big Kudos to our MilitaryAvenue Partner, Stephanie McGee, a Realtor with Keller Williams Preferred Realty.  She is going out of her way to raise money for Homes for Our Troops an organization that supports wounded-warriors.

First, she alerted us to this great organization so that we could tell military families about it:
Help Us Build a Home for Your Local Hero

Now Stephanie is taking it upon herself to help the organization herself!

Dear Family and Friends,
I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to support Homes for Our Troops. Please help support me in this important project by contributing generously. For information about this volunteer fundraiser and its programs, you can visit http://www.homesforourtroops.org/.

It is faster and easier than ever to support this great cause by making your tax-deductible donation online using the link below. If you would prefer, you can send your contribution to the address listed below.  Whatever you can give will help - it all adds up! I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress.

Sincerely,
Stephanie Mcgee

What are you doing for our Heroes? Get involved! It not only looks great on the ‘resume’ but it shows TRUE support for the military family! A military family can sniff out a marketing-ploy when they see one. Don’t fall victim to ‘cheap marketing’. Put your heart into it! Think about what these families /need/ and then go about getting it done!

Contribute to Stephanie's cause by click on her personal-fundraising page above, or start your own fundraiser for an accredited military-organization.  THEN let us know about it!  We love to let military-families know about organizations that support them.

Part of the Pulse: Department of Defense (DoD) Roundtables

Have you been watching the news about Haiti? There is real devastation. Real needs. Real hopelessness.
Real help. Real hope. Real heroes.

As a team at MilitaryAvenue we have been very proud of our US Military and the aid they are providing to the people that need it. It has been an opportune time for us to continue our partnership with the Department of Defense (DoD) and get the word out about the aid that the military is providing, what they need, the obstacles they have run into. US Marines, US Sailors, US Airmen, US Soldiers, US Coast Guard. They are there amidst the rubble. We have been there to hear from the admirals, the generals, the doctors, those in command. Col. Dale Kissinger (USAF retired) has been focusing on the DoD Roundtables that he is personally invited to by the DoD two or three times A DAY.  Why? Because it is important to us that you, your neighbors, your customers, the military families in your community know what is going on.

Do you want to know more about what is happening in Haiti? What is happening in Afghanistan? Tune into our Military Family blog. We are proud to be a part of the pulse!

In my own civilian-neighborhood, far from any military-base, we have a Coast Guard (reserves) member that is off to Haiti. He had to leave his family with two days notice. His wife is a teacher with three young ones. Some deployments we get many months notice before saying good-bye, some only a few precious hours.  How about your neighborhood? Your community? Your customers? Who needs help? Get to know the military-families and you will be part of the aid they need!
